CAPMAS: Egypt’s Inflation Rate Hits 13.6% in March

The annual urban inflation rate in Egypt reached 13.6% in March, according to data released today by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
This is the highest consumer price reading since last August, driven by factors such as increased fuel prices and public transportation fares, including trains and the metro. This followed a 300% hike in the price of subsidized bread in May last year — the first increase of its kind in over three decades.
On a monthly basis, urban inflation recorded 1.6% in March, up from 1.4% in February.
This monthly rise was mainly due to a 2.9% increase in food and beverage prices, with a notable 23.6% surge in fruit prices. The spike coincided with the month of Ramadan, a period typically marked by higher consumption compared to other times of the year.
